A decade has passed since the 26/11 but the mere thought of it still leaves people shell-shocked. On 26th November 2008 terrorist attacks took place in Mumbai by 10 members of Pakistan based terrorist organization, Lashkar-e-Taliba. They carried out series of shootings and bombings, lasting four days, in Mumbai. These attacks began on 26th November 2008 and lasted until 29th November 2008. 166 people died and 308 were wounded due to these attacks. The terrorists took Mumbai by surprise when, around 9:20 pm, they started gun firing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, that lasted about one and a half hour. And then successively attacks took place at Nariman House area, Leopold café, Taj Mahal Palace and Oberoi Trident hotel.
The Heroes of 26/11:
These attacks took India by storm and left the entire nation questioning their security and their faith in the political leaders. Citizens felt unsafe in their own homes and the entire city was in a state of frenzy. Amidst all this chaos the police force was the only thing people of Mumbai as well as India were counting on. NSG commandos arrived from Delhi and the joint force of Mumbai police and NSG commandos prevailed over the terrorists. And proved their worth by getting in control of the entire situation in 4 days. They prioritized their duty over their own lives and it was only because of them that the people of Mumbai could again feel a sense of safety in their own city.
There were many fallen men among both the Mumbai police as well as NSG. And the people of this country can never forget the sacrifice they made to keep the citizens of this country safe. The sacrifice their families made is also something the entire nation admires and respects.
The lives of many innocent citizens were lost in these attacks. More than a hundred civilians were mercilessly killed during the open gunfire and the bombings. These terrorists targeted crowded places just to increase the number of casualties. They were normal people just like you and me, going about their daily lives unknown about the danger lurking over their lives. And then just with a shot of a bullet or a blasting of a bomb, they were no more. They were taken away from their families and were robbed of a life they deserved. Many sons, daughters, husband, and wives were lost that day and they can neither be forgotten nor replaced.
26/11 showed us two completely different sides of humanity. One where people were deliberately trying to kill as many people as possible, even when it came with a cost of their own lives. And the other where people were desperately trying to save as many people as possible, even when it came with a cost of their lives. 9 out of the 10 terrorists were shot dead and the only surviving attacker, Ajmal Kasab was captured. He was hanged in Yerwada jail in 2012, which probably brought a bit of justice to all the people who lost their lives in these attacks.
India will never forget the innocent lives that were lost and the sacrifices that were made. Even though they are not among us anymore, they will always be remembered and kept alive within every beating heart in this country.
